How to Make Your Home Smell Like Christmas
published December 1, 2018; updated October 2025
WOOO!! It’s officially socially acceptable to have Christmas music playing, the tree twinkling, and maybe a Hallmark movie humming in the background. Though, if we’re being honest, I was already doing at least two of those weeks ago.
I’ve always been obsessed with Christmas scents — the ones that make your whole house smell like cinnamon rolls, fresh pine, and cozy nostalgia all at once. For years, I was a total candle-and-plug-in girl. But once I had my boys, I started to second-guess having open flames or synthetic scents running all day.
I had been using essential oils for stress reduction for years, and decided it was time to start using them to scent my home and ditch some of the other products. I soon became addicted to having a diffuser on. You can literally create any vibe or holiday mood to your liking, and it truly leaves the home feeling calmer!
Though let me say, I am not against a nostalgic candle or scent either! It is all about balance!
I created these recipes for those of you who might be new to essential oils and just starting to explore or even if you are an essential oil pro who is just looking for extra variety in your holiday scents this year! I’ve got you covered with a mix of diffuser blends, reed diffuser ideas, room sprays, and a classic stovetop recipe (plus a festive Christmas playlist to set the mood for the season.

Christmas Reed Diffuser Blends
Reed diffusers are perfect if you want something that quietly scents a space all day without needing to plug in or remember to refill water.
What you’ll need:
2 tbsp light oil (like almond, safflower, or grapeseed)
1–2 tbsp vodka or witch hazel (helps the oil travel up the reeds)
20–30 drops essential oils
Just pour, swirl, and insert your reeds. Flip them every few days for a scent refresh.

20–30 drops of essential oils
Shake before each use and spritz on curtains, bedding, or the air when guests are coming.

Stovetop Christmas Simmer Pot
If you’re not into oils yet, this one’s for you — your whole home will smell like Christmas magic.
Ingredients:
1 orange, sliced
1 cup fresh cranberries
3 cinnamon sticks
1 tbsp whole cloves
(Optional) 1 small pine branch or rosemary
Directions
Add everything to a pot of water, bring to a gentle boil, then simmer on low. Add more water throughout the day as needed.
Homemakers tip: Keep a small mason jar of prepped ingredients in the fridge — that way you can just dump it into the pot whenever you need a quick mood lift.
